SIP (Session Initiation Protocol)

Reducing voice communication costs while also providing enhanced services

SIP Explained

One of our Collaboration and Contact Centre experts, Nick Osborn, explains a little about SIP.

A scalable and resilient solution

SIP (short for Session Initiation Protocol) is in no way new – it has been widely used over the last fifteen years and is the perfect technology for the delivery of telephone calls into your business, and a great replacement for slowly retiring, ISDN.

SIP is more flexible than traditional services such as ISDN or TDM, instead of being tied to a physical connection it can be delivered over the internet or a private network such as MPLS. This in turn means telephone numbers are also no longer tied to a physical location and calls to direct dial number can be delivered anywhere in the world no matter what geographic location they may reflect.

A great option as a disaster recovery solution

The flexible geographic range makes SIP a great option as a disaster recovery solution. With a range of options available like having a primary connection into your own Data Centre and secondary into a different Data Centre whether it be ours or something like Azure, an automatic fail over to a secondary location can be on hand in the event of a disaster.

Flexible and cost-effective

As a capacity-based solution, businesses can achieve cost savings by only paying for the channels they require for the number of concurrent calls they want to be able to make or take. Furthermore, because it is delivered by IP SIP can be flexed up and down to satisfy seasonal demands or planned events.

Benefits of SIP

Cost efficient and easily scalable up and down as needed

Disaster recovery – numbers can be redirected easily including individual diverts to mobile numbers

Ultimate agility – once using SIP numbers can be moved around easily

Make the most of your existing phone system using Session Boarder Controllers (SBC)

Perfect for businesses:

Wishing to move away from a legacy phone system to a cloud based service

Wanting to remove reliance on on-premises infrastructure

Wishing to reduce call capacity and call costs – with more people working remotely less capacity is needed in the office

Planning to open up offices in different locations but wishing to have consistent geographic numbers
