PSTN Switch off – What you need to know

PSTN services are being switched off in 2027 – it is time to start preparing.

The timelines may  have altered but the PSTN switch off has started and all businesses PSTN services will be switched off in January 2027.

Its time to ensure you upgrade before the rush to the exit

Why and when is the switch off happening

The Public Switch Telephone Network (PSTN) will close down in January 2027 by this time every phone line in the UK will have moved to a next generation digital network that uses internet protocol (IP) across a fibre-based service.

It is important to note that January 2027 is the date set by BT, however other communications providers will be switching off their services (which are also delivered via BT’s network) ahead of this deadline date. It is important to check when your provider is planning to stop their services.

The change is happening because the current network is delivered on old technology that is not suited to the increased demands and expectations of the 21st century.

What will be the impact of the switch off

Any equipment that currently uses the PSTN will stop working: things like phone lines, fax lines, alarms, EPOS machines: door entry systems; CCTV etc..
